Gary
Dunbar’s students and their collective research are making a
difference.
The CMU psychology and neuroscience professor, who in fall 2008 was named executive director of the esteemed Field Neurosciences Institute in Saginaw, Michigan, directs CMU’s neuroscience program. Over nearly three decades, he’s pursued his research intensively, authored multiple articles and book chapters on treatment options, and, each step of the way, brought his students along with him.
Dunbar earned a master’s degree in psychology and another in biology from CMU. He spent six years teaching at his alma mater, left for Clark University to complete a doctoral degree in psychobiology, then returned to CMU in 1987.
During his tenure at CMU, Dunbar has developed a neuroscience undergraduate program, an experimental psychology graduate program, and most recently, the Ph.D. program in neuroscience. He believes this program will be just as successful as the undergraduate neuroscience program, which quickly expanded from a few students to more than 60 majors.
